Review - Space Three Musketeers

Prologue
Darn! Older otaku were so easily contented back in the 80’s. Any kind of animation seemed cool, as long as it was Japanese. I really liked this movie when I was 6, simply because it was combining cute and childish characters doing really violent stuff. A very big contrast to the non-violently giggly My Little Pony and the militaristically brainless G.I.Joe that were also airing at the time.
Animation & Sound: 3
AWFUL! Nobody in the current otaku generation would bother watching it. The animation is very crude, with simple character figures, no motion fluidity and completely fake visual and sound effects. As for the music, if you find J-pop to be lame most of the time, then embrace yourselves for the lamest kind of childish music themes there are.
Story: 3
Hohoho! Story… Nice joke…
Three Earth boys aid a space princess to protect her giggly planet of happiness from evil, grim space pirates. They travel to her planet, storm the enemy base and then get chased in space.
Well, that’s all. It’s as simple as that. Don’t expect any plot twists or deeper meanings. It’s just a bunch of kids taking the role of modern musketeers and protects the world from evil while saving beautiful damsels in distress… in a very crude and unrealistic way.
Characters: 4
The word “characters†is a rather overestimating term for these guys. They are fake, shallow, uninteresting and above all lame-looking. The leading three are a serious and strong one (the leader of the team with the usual red colors and a huge esteem in justice and righteousness), a geeky tall one with an umbrella and an ugly and fat one, used for comic relief. Man, fat people were always the stupid and comical ones in all the old titles. Talk about racism!
The princess is your typical beautiful, angelically creature that always needs a hero to save her and the evil pirates are your typical, cheesy bad-without-explanation villains.
And there are a few others, just for making us believe that the universe is not that empty. They are just there to fill the screen.
Enjoyment: 5
Some otaku may actually like the way they act, make jokes and fight. In the same way some find Spongebob Squarepants to be ingenious, that is.
Value: 1
What value? Seeing it once is more than it deserves. It was interesting when I was 6 and there weren’t so many titles to choose from… Plus, DVDs were only science fiction. I really don’t recommend this one to anyone looking for something worthy of his/her free time.
