Story: 8
This is the sixth One Piece movie. There are no ties with the main story. It is a stand-alone movie and can be regarded as a typical filler episode. The story takes place after episode 226 (right after the filler episodes after the Skyepia story ark).

The Straw Hat pirate crew is invited to a pirate recreation island, were they participate in several tests to prove their worth. But the baron of the island has a terrible secret that puts everyone’s lives to eminent death.

The story starts rather simple. The first half appears to be just another wacky adventure without any deeper meanings. But as the baron’s past is revealed, the story becomes a psychological thriller! There is a really scary revelation towards the end that makes this movie the most surprising and perplex of all One Piece movies.

Characters: 8
The Straw Hat pirates are as funny as they were in the series. Since this is a filler story, no character development takes place. But the eternal bond amongst nakama is here as well and plays a very important part.

Baron Omatsuri begins as another generic villain. But after the big revelation, he becomes a very interesting character who sacrifices everything for the well being of his loved-ones. He is by far the best rival (he is not really a villain) of all One Piece movies. Plus, he is super strong and has a weird supernatural plant at his disposal. Nice!

Animation: 8
The graphics are of much higher quality than the series. There are many aesthetic details in the animation and the motion fluidity is very good. Plus, this movie uses a weird mix of dark and intentionally crummy graphics that increase the scare factor.

Sound: 7
Sound effects and voice acting were kept the same as in the series. The extra thriller theme songs were ok.

Value: 6
This movie has nothing to offer to the series. But it is a generally good psychological thriller.

Enjoyment: 8
The fighting scenes were great but the first half is generally boring. The second half has all the juicy parts.

Verdict
Yo ho ho and a bottle of filler… I mean rum.
