Review - One Piece (2000)

Story: 5
This is the first One Piece movie. There are no ties with the main story. It is a stand-alone movie and can be regarded as a typical filler episode. The story takes place after episode 18 (right after Usopp joins the crew).
The Straw Hat pirates are looking for the treasure of a renowned pirate of old. And so does another evil pirate crew.
The story is really simple. Plus, it is essentially a summary of the original messages the series promotes. Woonan’s legendary treasure is another form of D. Roger’s treasure and the pirate message they find towards the end describes the ideal life of piracy Luffy is looking for.
Characters: 5
The Straw Hat pirates are as funny as they were in the series. Since this is a filler story, no character development takes place.
The main bad guy, El Draco, is just a generic villain with no backdrop story or any interest as a villain.
Animation: 6
The graphics are of the same quality the first episodes had. Rather crude and may turn you off from watching.
Sound: 7
Sound effects and voice acting were kept the same as in the series.
Value: 2
This movie has nothing to offer to the series. You can view it just to be reminded of the general atmosphere of the series.
Enjoyment: 3
The fighting scenes were ok but not worth remembering.
Verdict
Yo ho ho and a bottle of filler… I mean rum.
