Value & Enjoyment: 4
Epic Fantasy and Anime don’t seem to match well.
The Record of Lodoss War was boring but at least it had great epic atmosphere.
Slayers had a silly story but at least it was funny.
.hack//ROOTS (as it appears and not as it really is fantasy) was boring but at least it had nice graphics and sound.
This short Swords & Sorcery series has NOTHING INTERESTING in it.
From its first minute to the very last, I felt I was wasting my time with it. And the reasons are:
Animation: 5
We get medium detail to graphics, simple and dry battles, mostly choppy animation and completely uninteresting character figures and background settings. Nothing you wouldn’t find in an average, low-budgeted fairy tale.
Sound: 5
We get lame pop songs and mediocre voice acting. Nothing you wouldn’t hear in a childish run-of-the-mill cartoon.
Story: 4
The story can’t get more plain and straightforward. In a magical/medieval world, an evil wizard usurps power and adventurers are sent to stop him.
The series is only four episodes and it still felt long and tiresome. The dungeon delving felt more like filler rather than part of the main story.
Characters: 5
The characters are stereotypes, without much of a backdrop story or strong presence. The cross-gender protagonist was a dried-up imitation of Ranma ½, the cherry cat-girl is less interesting even than the one in .hack//ROOTS, the evil wizard is as real as a carton box and the rest of the adventurers are there just for show.
Verdict
The accused is found … GUILTY! [b] … Just as the name of the series applies; Ruin Explorers are only a ruin.
